7 Tips to Keep Motivated

Some people arrive early for work and happily stay late, performing productively throughout the day.  Others watch the clock, defocused and not accomplishing much throughout the day.   I work from home at least part of the time, and I’m very familiar with the distractions that can pull me away from my goals. What separates people that are highly productive from those that aren’t?  The answer is simple: the ability to keep yourself motivated.

As a coach I know that people can change; I see it in myself and in others all the time.  Once you realize that you are totally responsible and capable of creating the motivation necessary to achieve the life of your dreams, the more successful you will be.

Motivation is what will keep you going when interruptions or distractions get in the way.  Motivation is what will keep you going when the doubts and fears make you feel like stopping. Get good at keeping yourself motivated, quieting the doubts and fears, and you will be able to achieve almost anything you want.

Try incorporating the following strategies to ensure that your motivation will rise and be with you everyday, all day:

Get Clear on Your Goals

Think of goals as your personal GPS, your navigational system.  They keep you going in the right direction. They tell you where you want to stop for a rest, and what your final destination is.  Figure out your dreams for each area of your life, and set goals to get what you want.  Be clear on what the benefit is of each goal. Review your goals everyday (ok – at least every week!), upgrade them as needed and be sure to focus on the benefits as you head toward fulfilling your dreams.

Ongoing Planning

I’m a planner.  That doesn’t mean I can’t be spontaneous, but I do like to have a basic guideline, at least.  Productivity experts say that one hour of planning saves four hours of productivity. By taking time everyday to plan what you are going to do today to move closer to your goals, you will be accelerating your process of accomplishment.  I usually do my planning for the week on Sunday, and then review each night before bed to catch any changes.  Do what works for you, just be sure to do it.

Make an Investment

Invest emotionally, financially and physically in your goals to keep you motivated.  The more invested you are the more likely you are to succeed.  Seek out support from a friend who believes in you, a service or an online support group to help hold you to task.  Hire a coach who will help you stay focused and hold you accountable.  When we give voice to our goals, they begin to come alive.

Celebrate Each Accomplishment

Nothing will motivate you more than being successful.  This is the often-overlooked factor in staying motivated. The more successful you are, the more you are motivated to continue toward your goal.  Be sure to stop, notice and celebrate your accomplishments, no matter how small, or else you will not enjoy the natural motivation boost which will help propel you toward fulfilling your dreams!

Keep Up Your Personal Daily Habits

There are those things you know to do, that you may not always do, that make a big difference in how motivated and productive you are.  Pick at least five daily habits that you know make a difference for you in the short and long term.  My top recommendations for daily personal habits are getting regular exercise, eating healthy (at least most of the time!), drinking plenty of water, getting a good night’s sleep, and as I have already stated, reviewing your goals and making time for planning.

Lose the Negative People

If you have people in your life that put you down, or complain constantly, it is time for you to limit or eliminate your interaction with them.  Bring this to their attention in a loving way and let them know that this does not work for you.  Maybe they are not even aware of it.  If your request is not honored, then give serious consideration to whether or not this relationship is serving you.

Believe in Your Ability

One of the most important ingredients in staying motivated is to believe in yourself, and to believe in your ability to accomplish your goals.  Make sure you are talking to yourself positively every day, that you are not putting yourself down, and that you are not making statements that don’t support you. Be your own best success coach.

To stay motivated, use these ideas.  Don’t wait!  Start today.  The more motivated you are, the easier it will be to create what you want everywhere in your life and achieve the life of your dreams.
