What does it mean to ‘live on purpose’? Really, what we’re asking is “why are you here? what are you meant to be doing?”. Tim Kelley, author, speaker, says that when clients are trying to find their purpose, they’re searching for meaning and/or for direction. When you start to gain clarity on who you are at your core, you’ll be able to create a life that is living on purpose. This is the foundation on which to start making your dreams come true.
Passion and purpose go hand in hand, and when aligned will excite you! What experiences have you had where you were so engrossed in what you were doing that time flew by? You forgot to eat? Day turned into night? You were most probably living in passion at that moment. The goal is to identify patterns in behavior, of feeling, or of being and to find the broader common theme. Then come up with a short phrase or statement that captures the essence of who you are. This is a good place to start. Examples: To live adventurously; to couragously take risks; to creatively lead with passion and integrity (that’s mine!).
The word passion doesn’t resonate with everyone. So, here’s some other ways to look at this exercise:
1. When are the times in your life when you’ve felt most fulfilled?
2. When are the time when you’ve felt your life has had the most meaning?
3. When are the times when you’ve felt most aligned?
4. When are the times when you’ve experienced ease, flow, synchronicity and serendipity?
Some other questions to fuel your thoughts:
1. What did you always want to be or do when you grew up?
2. List the things to which you’re consistently drawn. What about them draws you?
The journey of identifying your purpose can take some time. When you’ve come up with a statement that feels ok to you, sit with it for awhile. Let it age like a good wine, getting richer in flavor and depth. Don’t wordsmith it to death! As you go through the sessions, you may gain further clarity and you can tweek the wording if necessary. Hear it, see it, feel it, taste it, sense it with all of you –because it is who YOU are.
